Welsh companies describe business rates increase as a hurricane for high street

An increase in business rates in Wales has sparked concerns among hospitality and retail firms, with some businesses on the brink of closure due to rising costs. Since April, the Welsh government has reduced its discount on business rates for these sectors, leading to higher bills for high street traders.

UK Hospitality Cymru has warned that the industry is facing a “perfect hurricane” of financial strain, with businesses struggling to stay afloat. Traders in Bangor, Gwynedd, have already felt the impact, with many shops closing their doors as a result of the rate increase.

Sophia Ingham, a clothes designer and shop owner in Bangor, expects to close her shop in July due to the rising business rates. She emphasized the need for the government to reduce rates to help rejuvenate high streets rather than further harm them.

Andria Thomas, owner of Dot clothing shop in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, also expressed frustration at the disparity in rates between Wales and England. She highlighted the unfairness of having to pay higher rates compared to similar shops across the border, impacting her ability to make a profit and stay competitive.

The Welsh government defended its actions, stating that it provides significant support to businesses through various rates relief programs. However, business owners like Ingham and Thomas are calling for further reductions in rates to ensure the survival of local businesses and the revitalization of high streets across Wales.
