Welsh couple sentenced to jail for dine and dash fraud

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A Welsh couple’s dine and dash spree has come to an end as they are now paying the price behind bars. Bernard and Ann McDonagh were sentenced to prison for fraud after running up tabs they didn’t pay for, including luxurious meals and double portions of dessert.

Judge Paul Thomas at Swansea Crown Court described their actions as driven by “pure and utter greed.” He emphasized that their criminal behavior was not out of necessity but rather for the thrill of seeing if they could get away with it. The judge also condemned their exploitation of their children in the scheme, leaving them behind at the table while they made excuses to retrieve money that never materialized.

The McDonaghs, who have a history of convictions and used multiple aliases, were caught after restaurants shared images of them on social media. They pleaded guilty to five counts of fraud, stiffing four restaurants and a Chinese takeout business of nearly 1,170 pounds.

Ann McDonagh, 39, received a 12-month prison sentence for fraud and shoplifting, as well as obstructing a constable by falsely claiming to be pregnant. Her lawyer cited personal grief as a possible motive for her crimes. Bernard McDonagh, 41, was sentenced to eight months in prison and expressed deep remorse, bringing money to court for restitution.

The couple’s reckless behavior and disregard for the law have landed them in a situation they cannot escape. Their actions not only harmed the businesses they defrauded but also put their children in dangerous situations. As they face the consequences of their actions, it serves as a reminder that crime does not pay and that greed can lead to dire consequences.
