The City of West Hollywood is gearing up to raise awareness about sexual assault and consent during National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month in April. Community members are encouraged to participate in the #DenimDay campaign on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, by wearing jeans to show support for survivors of sexual assault.

Denim Day is an internationally recognized day to raise awareness about rape and sexual assault, stemming from a 1999 court ruling in Italy. The City’s Community Safety Department is organizing various events throughout the month to promote the message that “Only Yes Means Yes” when it comes to consent.

One of the key events planned is an outreach event on Friday, April 26, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at nightlife establishments in the Rainbow District and along the Sunset Strip. Participants, including members of the City Council, the Sheriff’s Station, and the Women’s Advisory Board, will distribute drink-spiking test strips to detect possible “date rape” drugs.

Statistics from the CDC highlight the prevalence of sexual violence, with nearly one in five women in America experiencing rape or attempted rape. The City of West Hollywood has taken proactive measures to address sexual assault, including implementing Bystander Intervention training for personnel in alcohol-serving establishments.

Community members are urged to reach out to the West Hollywood Sheriff’s Station at (310) 855-8850 if they are victims of any crime or have public safety concerns. Resources are also available for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and intimate partner stalking through organizations like Peace Over Violence and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

The City’s ongoing efforts aim to create a safe environment in nightlife establishments and promote a culture of consent and prevention of sexual assault. For more information on upcoming events and resources, residents can visit the City of West Hollywood’s website or contact the Community Safety Division at (323) 848-6414.
