West Virginia football is set to make a bold statement in the 2024 season with the debut of a black alternate uniform that pays homage to the state’s rich coal tradition. Designed to honor the hardworking miners who toil underground daily to supply energy around the world, the new uniform is a symbol of respect and admiration for their dedication and sacrifice.
The design process for the black alternate uniform was a thoughtful and immersive experience, with the team drawing inspiration from a day spent with actual miners. Every element of the uniform tells a story, from the reflective twill numbers to the coal pattern sourced from a West Virginia coal mine. The design team even visited the Leer Mine in Grafton, West Virginia, to gain firsthand insight into the work of a coal miner.
The uniform features reflective safety stripes, a sheared mine wall pattern, and a black matte helmet with metallic gray specks to resemble fresh-cut coal. The “Built on Bravery” Collection, developed in collaboration with the WVU Athletics and CLC, celebrates the coal industry and complements the new football jersey.
WVU Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker expressed pride in the design and implementation of the black alternate uniform, emphasizing the importance of connecting with West Virginians and honoring the state’s coal mining heritage. Fans can look forward to seeing the Mountaineers donning this special uniform on select occasions during the upcoming season, as a tribute to the resilience and bravery of West Virginia’s coal miners.
