Wetangula Urges Residents in Flood-Prone Areas in Kenya to Evacuate

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has issued a warning to residents living on river banks in Bungoma, urging them to vacate to avoid potential disaster caused by flooding during heavy rains. Wetangula emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and voluntary relocation for families in flood-prone areas to prevent loss of lives.

Speaking at separate funeral services in Bungoma County, Wetangula highlighted the risk posed by the heavy rains as announced by the Meteorological department. He called on the National government and county administrators to ensure the safety of those living in high-risk areas by facilitating their move to safer locations.

In response to the flooding, the government has initiated rescue missions and plans to assist victims who have been displaced. Wetangula also criticized the poor planning in Nairobi, attributing the adverse effects of the floods to the construction of buildings in drainage areas.

Additionally, preparations are underway in Bungoma town for the upcoming Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, where President William Ruto is expected to preside over the event at Kanduyi stadium. Wetangula expressed confidence in the town’s growth potential and urged residents to support efforts by the government to enhance infrastructure and attract investments.

The event will mark a significant milestone for Bungoma as the second county in the former Western Province to host a national holiday, following the successful hosting of Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kakamega. With the support of local leaders and officials, Bungoma aims to showcase its development and economic prospects during the upcoming national event.
