WGAU: UNG Women’s Tennis Team Secures Spot at Nationals

The University of North Georgia women’s tennis team is on a winning streak, with their eyes set on a national title after a thrilling victory in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional. Ranked No. 3 in the country, the Nighthawks secured a spot in the 16-team NCAA championship event by defeating Peach Belt Conference rival No. 11 Columbus State in a nail-biting 4-3 match on May 11 at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.

Coach Kent Norsworthy praised his team’s determination and unity, emphasizing their relentless spirit and shared goal of winning for each other. The players, representing different parts of the world, have come together with a common drive to succeed and bring home the trophy.

Junior Angelina Linnikova, junior Ashley Moinard, senior Svetlana Teterina, and senior Valentina Ascarrunz delivered singles wins that powered the Nighthawks to victory over Columbus State, the only team to defeat UNG this season. With a program record of 23 victories, surpassing the previous mark set by the 2019 team, the Nighthawks are hungry for more success.

As they prepare for the national championship event in Altamonte Springs, Florida, the team remains focused and determined to make history. Coach Norsworthy expressed confidence in his veteran group’s leadership and team chemistry, highlighting their ability to turn past experiences into positive outcomes on the court. The Nighthawks are ready to showcase their skills on the big stage and continue their quest for a national title.
