Scientists at Amsterdam UMC have made a groundbreaking discovery that could potentially reverse aging in tissues through exercise. Their study, published in Nature Aging, revealed that a specific type of fat accumulates in aging tissues and can be reversed with physical activity.

Professor Riekelt Houtkooper from Genetic Metabolic Diseases of Amsterdam UMC stated, “The idea that we could reverse aging is something that was long considered science fiction, but these findings do allow us to understand a lot more about the aging process.” This discovery challenges the notion that age-related decline is inevitable and opens doors to innovative interventions.

The research focused on lipid accumulation in aging tissues, specifically the elevation of bis(monoacylglycero)phosphates (BMPs) in older animals and humans. By analyzing muscle biopsies before and after exercise interventions, the team observed a decrease in BMP levels among active participants, indicating the potential impact of lifestyle interventions on aging processes.
