A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Sydney has revealed the importance of timing when it comes to exercise, especially for those who are overweight or suffering from Type 2 diabetes. The study, which monitored 30,000 participants over almost 8 years, found that engaging in moderate to vigorous evening activities (between 6pm and midnight) can significantly reduce the risk of premature death or death from cardiovascular disease.
Participants in the study, all living with obesity, were given wearable fitness tracking devices to monitor their movement patterns throughout the day. The results showed that just 3 minutes or more of evening exercise was enough to bring about positive health outcomes. According to Dr. Angelo Sabag, a Lecturer in Exercise Physiology at the University of Sydney, this research is particularly important given the high rates of obesity and associated health risks in Australia and other western countries.
In addition to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, exercising in the evening has also been shown to benefit those with Type 2 diabetes by offsetting glucose intolerance and other complications. Professor Emmanuel Stamatakis, Director of the Mackenzie Wearables Hub and senior author of the study, emphasized the importance of further research to establish causal links between timing of physical activity and health outcomes.
Overall, the findings of this study suggest that planning evening activities could play a crucial role in managing obesity and Type 2 diabetes, as well as promoting preventive healthcare in general. So, for those looking to make positive changes to their lifestyle, it might be worth considering the timing of your exercise sessions.
