The tragic crash of the Iranian president’s helicopter in mountainous fog has raised questions about the safety and maintenance of the U.S.-designed Bell 212 aircraft. The Bell 212, a civilian version of the Vietnam-era Huey military helicopter, is widely used around the world, including by the Iranian air force for its VIP squadron.

The crash, which claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi and eight others, has been attributed to a “technical failure” by Iranian authorities. Despite poor relations between Tehran and Washington, the Iranian air force maintains five Bell 212 aircraft, some of which are decades old and face maintenance challenges due to international sanctions on Iran.

Bell Helicopter, now Bell Textron, the manufacturer of the Bell 212, stated that they do not conduct any business in Iran and have no knowledge of the state of the helicopter involved in the crash. U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby denied accusations that U.S. sanctions may have played a role in the crash.

The crash occurred in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province amid dense fog, making it difficult for search teams to reach the site. Investigators are likely to focus on the bad weather and poor visibility at the time of the crash. The Flight Safety Foundation lists about 430 Bell 212 accidents since 1972, with nearly 40% of them resulting in fatalities.

The crash has also highlighted the challenges Iran faces in operating and maintaining aircraft due to sanctions on U.S. aviation equipment. The incident underscores the broader impact of sanctions on Iran’s aviation sector and industries, limiting its ability to import aircraft and parts from Western countries.
