WhatsApp has made a significant change to its user interface on Android smartphones, moving the four navigation tabs from the top of the screen to the bottom. This update aims to make it easier for users to switch between tabs while using the app with one hand.
The new design, which has been in the beta version for a few months, is now being rolled out to all users. WhatsApp announced the change on X (formerly Twitter), showcasing images of the old interface with tabs for communities, chats, status, and calls above the chat list. With the update, these tabs are now located at the bottom of the screen with rearranged icons.
This shift in navigation tabs is a notable change for WhatsApp on Android, bringing the main tabs within reach of the user’s thumb for easier access. However, functions like searching will still require reaching the top of the screen. The iOS version of WhatsApp also displays tabs at the bottom, including a fifth tab for the settings menu.
While users are getting accustomed to the new interface, WhatsApp is working on developing more features for the app. This includes the ability to make international payments using the NPCI’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in India, as well as introducing AI-powered features like creating stickers and AI-powered image editing. These upcoming features are expected to enhance the user experience on WhatsApp in the near future.
