Wheeling Central Dominates Martins Ferry to Win OVAC Softball Championship

In a thrilling showdown at Lisa’s Field at the I-470 J.B. Chambers Ballparks, Wheeling Central’s softball team secured their 16th OVAC championship with a resounding 9-1 victory over top-seeded Martins Ferry in the Class 3A title game.

The Maroon Knights (16-4) displayed a stellar performance, led by junior pitcher Josie Frizzell, who limited the Purple Riders (11-4) to just two hits while striking out 12 batters. Frizzell’s exceptional pitching, combined with well-placed base hits, proved to be the winning formula for Wheeling Central.

Head coach Buck Davidson expressed his pride in the team’s cohesive effort, stating, “The girls really came together and played an excellent game all the way around.” This victory marked Wheeling Central’s first championship since 2017, highlighting their determination and skill on the field.

Despite a valiant effort from Martins Ferry, Wheeling Central’s dominance was evident throughout the game. The Maroon Knights capitalized on early opportunities, scoring three runs in the third inning and adding four more in the fourth to extend their lead to 8-0.

Martins Ferry managed to score a lone run in the final inning, but it was not enough to overcome Wheeling Central’s commanding performance. Frizzell sealed the victory by retiring the last two hitters, securing the championship title for her team.

With this win, Wheeling Central looks ahead to the upcoming W.Va. Class A Region I, Sectional I tournament, while Martins Ferry prepares for their next matchups against Cambridge and Indian Creek in the Buckeye 8 crossover.

The thrilling showdown between Wheeling Central and Martins Ferry showcased the talent and determination of both teams, with Wheeling Central emerging as the deserving champions of the OVAC softball championship.
