Moving is considered one of the most stressful endeavors in life, with one in four Americans rating it as more overwhelming than losing a job, switching careers, or even running for president. A recent survey of 2,000 Americans who have moved in the last five years, commissioned by College HUNKS Hauling Junk & Moving and conducted by Talker Research, delved into the challenges and emotions associated with moving.
The survey revealed that the average American has moved five times in their lifetime and expects to move three more times in the future. The top reason for moving was to pursue a new phase in life, followed by accessing better opportunities, living closer to family, and stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Some respondents even moved to create a fresh start in a place where no one knew them.
Emotions ran high during the moving process, with anxiety and excitement topping the list. Joy, hope, and dread were also prevalent, with many feeling relief from toxic environments or people. The logistics of moving were also daunting, with the average American putting in a 16-hour day and only taking two rest breaks during their most recent move.
Many respondents expressed anxiety about having too many belongings and not enough help to move, with some even worrying about having a nervous breakdown. To alleviate some of the stress, respondents recommended setting aside more time than needed to pack, decluttering unused belongings, asking for help from friends and family, and considering hiring a moving service.
Nick Friedman, co-founder of College HUNKS, emphasized the emotional toll of moving, stating, “Not only is it logistically and physically strenuous, it’s an emotionally-charged process. Organizing your things, downsizing, and getting ready to move into a new space often dredges up big feelings.” He advised individuals to give themselves enough time and grace to complete the moving process and not to hesitate to ask for help.
In conclusion, moving is a significant life event that can evoke a range of emotions and challenges. While it may be overwhelming, seeking support from loved ones or professional services can make the process more manageable. As the survey highlighted, moving is not just about changing locations but also about transitioning to a new phase in life.
