As the ski season at Whiteface Mountain in Wilmington winds down, the annual Pond Skimming Contest is set to take place on Saturday, April 6. Skiers and snowboarders are invited to participate in this fun event, with sign-ups limited to the first 100 contestants. Those interested can secure a spot between 8 and 11 a.m. at guest services, and are encouraged to bring their A-game and most creative costumes for the plunge. Spectators can enjoy the show at the Round-A-Bout trail.

The last day open for skiing is scheduled to be Monday, April 8, with a solar eclipse watch party planned for that day. The mountain will then close mid-week and reopen the following Friday and weekend, depending on weather and ski conditions. The operational plan for the end of the ski season includes daily operations through April 8, closure on April 9-11, reopening on April 12-14, with plans for the following weekend still to be determined.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a mix of temperatures in the coming days, with highs near 38 on Friday, 39 on Saturday, and 45 on Sunday. The ski center currently has 41 of 96 trails open, serviced by four out of 12 lifts, with 4 to 6 inches of fresh snow reported as of Thursday morning.

As the season comes to a close, Whiteface Mountain officials are keeping a close eye on weather conditions and plan to adjust their schedule accordingly. Stay updated on the latest developments at whiteface.com.
