WHO reports that contaminated cough syrup is no longer available in Africa

A dangerous batch of Benylin Paediatric Syrup has been pulled from shelves in several African countries after tests revealed it contained high levels of the toxin diethylene glycol. The World Health Organization has confirmed that the contaminated batch is no longer available for sale in Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

The recalled batch of Benylin syrup was manufactured by Johnson & Johnson in South Africa in May 2021, but the brand is now owned by Kenvue after a spin-off from J&J last year. Kenvue has stated that they conducted tests on the recalled batch and did not detect any diethylene or ethylene glycol, but they are continuing to work with authorities on the matter.

Diethylene glycol is a dangerous toxin that can cause acute kidney failure, and it has been linked to the deaths of over 300 children in various countries since 2022. The WHO has warned countries and companies to remain vigilant about the risk of contamination in medicines.

Fortunately, no children have been reported harmed or killed in this latest incident. The WHO initially considered issuing a broader alert about Benylin but has since decided against it, stating that the contaminated batch is no longer on the market and there have been no reports of adverse effects.

Despite this reassurance, it is crucial for consumers to remain cautious and check the labels of any medications they purchase to ensure their safety and well-being.
