Why are Mohawk Valley students yearning for climate education?

The Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Science Center recently hosted the region’s second Youth Climate Summit, a free event aimed at engaging middle and high school students in climate adaptation solutions. With schools nationwide falling behind in climate education, the summit provided a platform for students to delve into pressing environmental issues.

Amy Samuels, the Onondaga Environmental Institute Outreach Coordinator, highlighted the students’ desire for climate education and the opportunity to be part of the solution. While New Jersey has already mandated climate change education in schools, a similar bill proposed by Assemblywoman Linda Resenthal in New York is still under consideration.

The summit, held at the Howard D. Mettelman Learning Center, featured various seminars on topics like reducing food waste, tree planting, and climate storytelling. Students also had the chance to interact with representatives from organizations like NYSERDA and the Finger Lakes Institute.

Maggie Reilly, a climate adaptation specialist, led a seminar on increasing climate resiliency, emphasizing the importance of natural solutions in building a sustainable future. Students were encouraged to take action and implement these solutions in their communities.

Attendees shared their perspectives on the summit, expressing concerns about the lack of climate education in schools and the impact of climate change on their daily lives. They emphasized the need for comprehensive climate curriculum to equip students with the knowledge and tools to address environmental challenges.
