Why Booking British Airways Flights for Under $2 with Avios is Not a Wise Use of Your Points

Reading Time: < 1 minute

British Airways Executive Club recently rolled out an enticing new offer allowing travelers to reduce the price of any BA-operated flight to just 1 British pound using Avios. While this may seem like a steal, a closer look reveals that it may not be the best deal for savvy travelers.

The new offer extends the 1-pound flights to all BA-operated flights worldwide in any cabin, giving Executive Club members the option to apply Avios to reduce the cash price of their flights. While this may sound like a great way to fly for almost nothing, the math tells a different story.

For example, if you were to book a flight from San Francisco International Airport to Heathrow Airport this summer for $1,393 round-trip in standard economy, you could use Avios to reduce the price. However, redeeming 145,750 Avios to save $794 would give your Avios a value of about 0.0054 cents each, well below the current valuation of 1.5 cents per Avios.

Alternatively, booking the same flight for 60,000 Avios plus 150 British pounds would save you 85,750 Avios and $411, giving your Avios a value of 2 cents each, exceeding the current valuation.

While the 1-pound flight offer may seem appealing, it may not always provide the best value for your Avios. It’s important to compare the redemption options and consider factors like sale fares, peak dates, and availability of “Book with Avios” seats to maximize the value of your points.

In conclusion, while the new offer may seem like a great way to save on flights, it’s essential to crunch the numbers and explore all redemption options to ensure you’re getting the most value out of your Avios.
