Williamstown Tennis Dominates Regional Competition

SHINNSTON — The Williamstown tennis program showcased its dominance in the Class AA/A Region II phase by clinching both the boys and girls team championships on Monday.

At Lincoln High School, the Williamstown boys secured their fourth consecutive regional title by defeating Moorefield 4-0 in the final. The Yellowjackets advanced to the championship round after a 4-0 victory over Lincoln on Saturday in Summit.

Meanwhile, at Robert C. Byrd High School, the Williamstown girls claimed their third regional title in the last four years by shutting out Notre Dame 4-0. The girls’ team secured the win with three victories in the doubles division and Gabi Holl’s 8-1 triumph over Francesca Reed in singles.

The doubles teams of Claire Strobl and Akhia Miller, Ashtyn McIntyre and Holl, and Athenn Stewart and Lauren Deem played a crucial role in securing the victory for the girls’ team.

With these victories, both the boys and girls teams have earned a spot in the state tournament scheduled for May 9-11 at Kanawha City Community Center in Charleston. The teams will now focus on the individual brackets for doubles and singles entries, with the top four placewinners in each bracket also advancing to the state tournament.

The Williamstown tennis program’s success in the regional competition highlights their talent and determination, setting the stage for an exciting state tournament ahead.
