Maia Johnson Shines in High Jump at St. Marys Invitational

ST. MARYS — Maia Johnson, a senior at Parkersburg South, made a remarkable debut in the high jump event at the St. Marys Invitational on Friday. Despite arriving late due to a close-call arrival, Johnson managed to secure a personal best by clearing 5 feet, 1 inch, which is three inches higher than her previous season record.

Johnson, who joined the track team for the first time this year, showcased her skills from volleyball as a hitter, translating them into success in the high jump. South girls track coach Megan Jones expressed optimism about Johnson’s potential, mentioning that she will also be competing in the long jump, 100, and 4×100 events.

Although Johnson missed out on two events due to a minor hip injury sustained during the high jump, her performance was still impressive. Coach Jones praised Johnson’s improvement and potential, stating, “The sky is the limit. She keeps improving. The more practice she has and opportunities to do it, she is just going to get better and better.”

Despite the challenges posed by flooding that prevented some schools from attending, the competition at the St. Marys Invitational was fierce. Williamstown’s Shelby Smith stood out by winning three events (100, 200, and 400), contributing to her team’s overall success. Doddridge County’s boys also put on a strong performance, scoring 115 points and securing a victory in the pole vault event.

Overall, the St. Marys Invitational showcased the talent and determination of high school track and field athletes, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.
