Willow Smith, the 23-year-old singer/songwriter, has opened up about the emotional journey she embarked on while creating her latest album, ‘Empathogen’. In a recent interview with Variety, Willow revealed that she was in a “place of healing” when writing the record, which features a softer and more introspective sound compared to her previous work.
Describing the album as a reflection of her own healing process, Willow explained that the title ‘Empathogen’ was inspired by certain molecular compounds like MDMA and psilocybin, which have a deep connection to life and can open one’s heart to a deeper sense of empathy. She shared that while making the album, she immersed herself in different ceremonial environments and ancient traditions to find inspiration for her music.
Despite coming from a famous family, with parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as brother Jaden Smith, all in the showbiz industry, Willow expressed her desire to be seen as her own person. She emphasized the importance of individuality and making one’s own decisions, while also expressing her love and closeness to her family.
With ‘Empathogen’, Willow aims to bring people in with her music, creating a space for healing and introspection. The album marks a significant shift in her artistic expression, showcasing a more vulnerable and empathetic side of the talented young artist.
