Winnipeg Blue Bombers struggle on offence in season opener, fall to Alouettes

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers suffered a disappointing 27-12 loss to the Montreal Alouettes in their season opener at Princess Auto Stadium. The Bombers, who sat out many of their starters during the pre-season, struggled to find their rhythm on both offense and defense.

Head coach Mike O’Shea took responsibility for the team’s lackluster performance, admitting that he may not have prepared them well enough for the start of the season. Despite the loss, O’Shea stood by his decision to rest many of the veteran players during the pre-season, stating that he wouldn’t change his approach.

Quarterback Zach Collaros, who did not take a single snap in the pre-season, had a subpar game, completing 20 of 33 passes for only 209 yards. Collaros acknowledged his poor performance and vowed to do better in the upcoming games.

The Bombers’ offense and special teams looked rusty, with running back Brady Oliveira being held to just 38 yards rushing and new returner Myron Mitchell fumbling on a punt return that led to an Alouettes touchdown. Veteran kicker Sergio Castillo also struggled, missing two field goal attempts and a convert.

Despite the disappointing start, defensive end Willie Jefferson remained optimistic, urging fans to stick with the team as they work to improve. The Bombers will look to bounce back in their week two matchup against the Ottawa RedBlacks next Thursday.

Overall, the loss was a wake-up call for the Bombers, who will need to regroup and make adjustments to ensure a more successful season. With a strong track record at home, the Bombers will be eager to redeem themselves in the upcoming games and prove that they are still a force to be reckoned with in the CFL.
