WKBW’s pre-recorded news signals a shifting industry landscape

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Channel 7, the local ABC affiliate, has confirmed that some of its newscasts are pre-recorded, with the telltale sign being whether an announcer mentions if the broadcast is live or not. News director Aaron Mason explained that they use Scrippscast technology for the noon, 7 p.m., and 11 p.m. newscasts, allowing them the flexibility to go live when necessary, especially for weather updates and breaking news.

Mason also revealed that the 11 p.m. newscast is pre-recorded on most nights, except for live weather segments and breaking news coverage. The station is currently pausing its Journalism Career Program for the upcoming year to explore its future.

In other news, Chelsea Swift has joined WGRZ-TV (Channel 2) as a reporter, coming from WJET in Erie, Pa. Former Spectrum News sports reporter Rachel Hopmayer has moved to WWJ-TV in Detroit as a sports anchor and reporter. Additionally, WBBZ-TV experienced a brief outage on Spectrum cable due to equipment repairs at the transmitter.

Lastly, the movie “Hit Man,” a comedy directed by Richard Linklater, is set to arrive on Netflix on June 7. Viewers can catch the pilot episode of “Young Sheldon” on CBS tonight, and the NFL has started teasing the upcoming season opener between Kansas City and the Baltimore Ravens on September 5. Stay tuned for more updates on the NFL schedule announcement.
