Woman explains why she chooses to pay $500 a month to live in an underground bunker

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Caitlin, a resident of California, has taken unconventional living to a whole new level by making an underground bunker her home. Located on her friend’s property, this unique abode offers her a cozy space to live in exchange for a weekly rent of $500. Despite the lack of natural light, Caitlin is enamored with her quirky set up and has been documenting her experience on social media platforms like TikTok.

The underground bunker, spanning 1,100 square feet, can accommodate up to 22 people with its numerous bunk beds and two bathrooms. Complete with a full kitchen, the bunker provides all the essential amenities for comfortable living. Caitlin, who moved into the bunker in April, emphasizes that she is not a conspiracy theorist but simply saw an opportunity for affordable housing in the current market.

In an interview with Realtor, Caitlin revealed that her friend acquired the property a few years ago, which came with the bonus of a hidden bunker. She proposed the idea of renting the bunker to her friend, ensuring that the space remains in good condition until they decide to sell the property. With rising housing costs and interest rates, Caitlin saw the bunker as a temporary solution to her accommodation needs.

One of the most appealing aspects of living in the bunker is the fact that utilities are covered, thanks to a well for water supply and solar panels for power. The entrance to the bunker is discreetly hidden beneath trap doors on the ground, providing a sense of security and privacy. Caitlin assures her followers that despite the bunker being located on a paved area, it is not a parking lot, and her exit remains unobstructed.

Inside the bunker, there are separate areas designated for living, dining, and sleeping. The main bedroom and one of the bathrooms are situated at one end, while the other side is set up as a living room and kitchen. Storage space is abundant, with multiple subfloor areas available for stowing belongings. Caitlin’s TikTok videos offer a glimpse into her daily life in the bunker, including how she navigates dating while living underground.

In a recent video, Caitlin shared a humorous anecdote about a potential date who was hesitant to visit her in the bunker. Despite initial concerns about coming across as a “serial killer,” Caitlin maintains a positive attitude about her unique living situation. While her bunker lifestyle may not be for everyone, she embraces the experience as a temporary solution to the challenges of finding affordable housing.

As Caitlin continues to share her journey of bunker living with her online audience, she offers a glimpse into a lifestyle that challenges traditional notions of home and shelter. With a sense of humor and a touch of adventure, Caitlin’s story serves as a reminder that home is where the heart is, even if it’s underground.
