In celebration of National Small Business Week, Western Maryland is putting a spotlight on female entrepreneurship. With more than 16 million businesses launching in the past five years, it’s surprising to learn that fewer than one in four are women-owned. Chandra Metz, owner of C & M Lawncare, shared her experience of constantly being mistaken as not being the owner of her business due to gender stereotypes.
Hagerstown is leading the charge in showcasing female business owners during this special week. Brittany Arizmendi, engagement officer for the City of Hagerstown, highlighted that at least half of the downtown businesses are owned by women, emphasizing the city’s support for female entrepreneurs.
Melissa Dimercurio, a marketing specialist, encourages women entrepreneurs to collaborate with their competitors to overcome challenges and celebrate successes together. Shelley McIntire, owner of The Alpine Plant Bar, believes that now is the perfect time to start a business in downtown Hagerstown due to the vibrant energy and support in the area.
For any women interested in taking the entrepreneurial plunge, the Washington County Greater Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce is available to provide guidance and support. With a strong community backing and a growing network of female entrepreneurs, now is the time for women to make their mark in the business world.
