Pepperdine Women’s Tennis Secures WCC Title with Gritty Performance

In a thrilling display of determination and teamwork, the Pepperdine women’s tennis team secured their 43rd and 44th WCC titles with a near-flawless performance in the conference tournament. The team’s victory was highlighted by senior Lourdes Tjen’s heroic comeback win over San Diego’s Elizabeth Goldsmith in a grueling three-set match.

Tjen’s resilience and fighting spirit were on full display as she battled back from a first-set loss to ultimately clinch the match with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory on court one. Her win not only sealed the team’s triumph but also showcased the depth and talent of the Pepperdine roster.

The entire team contributed to the success, with seniors Lisa Zaar and Anna Campana setting the tone with a doubles win, followed by Nikki Redelijk and freshman Vivian Yang clinching the doubles point. Campana and Tjen then delivered crucial singles victories to complete the sweep and secure the championship title.

Head coach Per Nilsson praised the team’s effort and resilience, emphasizing the hard work and dedication of the seniors who have been instrumental in the program’s success. Despite facing a tough challenge from San Diego, the Waves rose to the occasion and displayed their championship pedigree.

The victory not only solidified Pepperdine’s dominance in the WCC but also sets the stage for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Both Pepperdine and San Diego will eagerly await the selection show to learn their tournament opponents, with high hopes of continuing their impressive seasons on the national stage.

Overall, Pepperdine’s triumph in the WCC tournament was a testament to their grit, teamwork, and unwavering determination to succeed. As they look ahead to the challenges of the NCAA Tournament, the Waves are poised to make a strong statement on the national tennis scene.
