Women’s Tennis Shuts Out San Diego State to Advance to NCAA Second Round

The UCLA women’s tennis team secured a dominant 4-0 victory over San Diego State in under two hours on Friday, advancing to the NCAA Championships second round. The Bruins showcased their strength on their home courts at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, with three singles players winning their matches in straight sets.

Ahmani Guichard, Tian Fangran, and Bianca Fernandez all started strong with 6-0 first sets, ultimately clinching their matches to contribute to UCLA’s win. Guichard and Tian also teamed up to secure the doubles point for the Bruins. The Aztecs, who had a successful season winning the Mountain West Conference tournament, ended their campaign with a 16-7 record.

In another match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, Texas Tech emerged victorious against Denver with a 4-1 win. The stage is now set for a showdown between UCLA and Texas Tech in the super-regional berth match on Saturday at 12 p.m. PT.

The UCLA duo of Tian and Elise Wagle, named Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year, showcased their resilience by coming back from a 1-3 deficit to win their match. Tian also added a point in singles when her opponent was forced to retire, extending her winning streak to five matches.

With strong performances across the board, including a flawless 6-0, 6-0 victory from Guichard, the Bruins demonstrated their readiness to compete at the highest level. Fernandez sealed the deal for UCLA with a 6-0, 6-3 win on Court 3, securing the team’s spot in the next round of the NCAA Championships.
