The Union College women’s tennis team made history by matching the program’s single-season wins record for the second consecutive year. The team achieved this milestone by defeating SUNY Oneonta with a perfect 9-0 score in a non-conference match at the Dr. Hessian Tennis Courts in Oneonta, N.Y.
With this victory, Union College (9-6) equaled the program’s previous record of nine wins in a season, which was first set in 1982 and has been matched five times since then. Ten different players contributed to the team’s success, with senior Kate Hirnak and sophomore Kennedy Alexis leading the way with two wins each.
The day started off strong for Union as they swept all three doubles matches. The duo of Hirnak and Sydney Alphabet secured an 8-3 victory at third doubles, while Paige Tromblee and Claire Langille won 8-2 at second doubles. Alexis and Luisa Arizpe-Sierra completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at first doubles.
In singles play, Hirnak and her teammates continued their dominant performance. Hirnak won her match at sixth singles without dropping a game, while Gabby Gatto and Chara Meidani also secured convincing victories. Skylar Semon, Alexis, and Gracie Nicol rounded out the singles sweep with impressive wins.
The team’s next challenge will be to secure their 10th win of the season when they face #35 Skidmore College on Friday at 6 p.m. This match will be a crucial opportunity for Union College to further solidify their place in the program’s record books.
