Women’s Tennis Team Secures Third National Title

The University of Chicago Maroons clinched their first national championship title in women’s tennis after defeating Wesleyan 5-3 in a thrilling final match. The Maroons, who had reached the national championship match for the third consecutive season, finally broke through and secured the coveted title.

The match started with the Maroons taking a 2-1 lead after the doubles play, setting the stage for an intense singles competition. Head coach Jay Tee emphasized the importance of getting those two points on the board before singles play began, giving his team a solid foundation to work from.

In singles play, Rena Lin quickly secured a victory in the top spot, putting the Maroons up 3-1. However, Wesleyan fought back, winning the next two points to tie the match at 3-3. It all came down to the final three singles matches, with Sarena Biria, Sylwia Mikos, and the elder Mikos sister sealing the victory for the Maroons.

After the match, Coach Jay Tee reflected on the team’s journey to the championship, crediting the program’s history and the support of alumni, parents, administrators, and university leadership for the win. The Maroons now look ahead to the next season as defending champions and will also have several players competing in the NCAA individual championships.
