Women’s Tennis to Begin Big West Championship Against Long Beach State on Thursday

The Cal Poly women’s tennis team is gearing up for a showdown with Long Beach State in the quarterfinals of the Big West Championships, with a trip to the NCAA Tournament on the line. The Mustangs, seeded fifth with a 10-8-1 record, will face off against the fourth-seeded LBSU (12-7) on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Luis Obispo.

Cal Poly’s path to the quarterfinals was not without controversy, as a protest resulted in their final regular season match against UC Santa Barbara being changed to a tie, ultimately earning them the No. 5 seed. The Mustangs will be looking for revenge against Long Beach State after suffering a 4-3 defeat earlier in the season.

Junior Romane Mosse will carry a 12-match winning streak into the tournament, while sophomore Kennedy Buntrock has won her last five singles matches. In doubles, the Dunkle sisters have been a formidable pairing, with Delanie Dunkle on the verge of tying the program record for career dual doubles victories.

The winner of Thursday’s match will advance to the Big West semifinals to face the winner of UC Santa Barbara versus UC Irvine or UC Riverside.
