Wyden and Warren urge Education Department to provide answers

On April 11, 2024, Senators Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren took aim at General Dynamics for their alleged role in the botched launch of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The senators penned a letter to the CEO of General Dynamics, expressing their concerns over the technical issues plaguing the new FAFSA system, despite the company receiving a hefty $121.8 million contract to modernize the process.

According to the senators, the delays and technical glitches in the new FAFSA system have left millions of students in limbo, with colleges and universities receiving financial aid information months behind schedule. They highlighted the disproportionate impact on traditionally underserved communities, including Black, Latino, first-generation, and low-income students.

General Dynamics had promised to improve the customer experience and deliver cost savings through the modernization project, but the senators accused the company of failing to deliver on these promises. They described the FAFSA rollout as a “near-total failure” that is harming students and colleges across the country.

In response to the ongoing issues with the FAFSA system, Senators Wyden and Warren requested that General Dynamics provide answers to their questions by April 23rd. With millions of students depending on FAFSA aid to access higher education, the senators are determined to hold the company accountable for the disruptions caused by the faulty system.
