X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is shaking up its Explore section with the help of Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok. The X Engineering team announced on Friday that X’s Premium subscribers will now have access to personalized summaries of trending stories on the For You tab in Explore.

The For You page on X highlights popular news and stories within a user’s network, making it a go-to spot for catching up on the latest buzz without endless scrolling. With Grok’s AI-powered summaries, users can now get a quick overview of each trending story before diving into the associated X posts.

For example, a TechCrunch reader might see stories about Apple’s upcoming iPad event, Microsoft’s security updates, and burnout among AI engineers on their For You page. The Grok-powered summary for the burnout story highlights the competitive nature of the tech industry and the toll it takes on AI engineers.

Grok’s Stories aim to provide users with a snapshot of the top news on X, enticing them to upgrade to Premium subscriptions for exclusive access. The chatbot’s real-time access to X data sets it apart from other AI chatbots, offering a unique and rebellious take on the news.

Elon Musk’s vision for AI-powered news on X involves blending breaking news with commentary to create real-time summaries of events. While some may find this approach controversial, there is potential for users to delve deeper into the source material once their curiosity is piqued.

As AI news summaries become more prevalent, journalists and news publishers are grappling with the impact on traffic and revenue. X’s partnership with Grok represents a new frontier in news delivery, leveraging conversations on the platform to provide users with a fresh perspective on trending stories.

Grok’s Stories are now available to Premium X subscribers, with access starting at $8 per month for web users. With AI bots like Grok reshaping the news landscape, the future of journalism may hinge on finding a balance between automation and human curation.
