Xi Jinping advises Antony Blinken to steer clear of ‘hostile competition’ with China

Reading Time: < 1 minute

China’s President Xi Jinping has issued a warning to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, emphasizing the need to avoid “vicious competition” between the two countries. The tension between the US and China has been escalating over various issues, including the South China Sea, Taiwan, and Beijing’s support for Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

During a meeting in Beijing, Xi stressed the importance of the US and China being partners rather than rivals, seeking “mutual success” and refraining from causing harm to each other. He expressed hope for a confident, open, and prosperous United States, urging the US to view China’s development positively.

Blinken, who is on a three-day trip to China, raised concerns about China’s support for Russia’s defense industries and the need to maintain peace in the South China Sea and around Taiwan. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the increasing negative factors in Sino-US relations and called on the US to respect China’s “red lines” regarding Taiwan.

Despite some progress in cooperation between the two countries, tensions have also risen, particularly in the South China Sea. Chinese vessels have been interfering with the Philippines’ efforts to resupply Marines on a grounded ship in the region.

The US has reiterated its commitment to its defense treaty with the Philippines, expressing deep concern over the situation. Both Wang and Blinken agreed to continue military exchanges and consultations on various issues, including drug control, climate change, and artificial intelligence.

As the US-China relationship remains complex and challenging, both sides have expressed willingness to strengthen communication on international and regional issues. The outcome of these discussions will have significant implications for the future of bilateral relations between the two superpowers.
