YMCA to launch new fitness center in downtown South Bend

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The YMCA of Greater Michiana is set to expand its footprint in downtown South Bend with the opening of a new campus in a fitness center currently operated by a local hospital system. The move comes as part of a multi-million dollar development deal involving Beacon Health System, which will allow YMCA members to transition to the new facility without any additional fees.

The new YMCA campus will be located on the third and fourth floors of the Memorial Leighton Healthplex at 111 W. Jefferson Blvd, just across Main Street from the St. Joseph County Courthouse. The facility is expected to open in June, following Beacon’s move out by May 31. The South Bend Redevelopment Commission is set to review and approve the deal in its upcoming meeting.

In exchange for a rent-free eight-year lease, the YMCA will donate its old building on Northside Boulevard to the city for eventual redevelopment. The old building, which has been vacant since May 2020, includes a swimming pool, gym, racquetball courts, and other amenities. Plans for the new downtown space include a basketball court, indoor track, lap pool, and various fitness classes, with Beacon donating much of its equipment to the YMCA.

“We’re really grateful for the YMCA helping to preserve a downtown fitness location,” said Caleb Bauer, executive director of South Bend’s Department of Community Investment. The YMCA also plans to sign a new three-year agreement to continue operating at the O’Brien Center on Walter Street. The expansion aims to continue the YMCA’s legacy in the region and provide enhanced fitness and wellness opportunities for the community.
