Young women from a Rio favela aspire to conquer violence and compete in the Women’s World Cup in 2027

Reading Time: 2 minutes

In a favela just a short drive away from the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, 15-year-old soccer player Kaylane Alves dos Santos dreams of playing for Brazil’s national team in the 2027 Women’s World Cup final. Despite the challenges she faces in her impoverished and violent neighborhood, dos Santos remains determined to make her dream a reality.

The recent decision by FIFA to award Brazil the hosting rights for the Women’s World Cup has given dos Santos and her teammates a renewed sense of hope and motivation. The prospect of playing on the same stage as their idols and representing their country on home soil is a dream come true for these young aspiring athletes.

Training on an artificial grass pitch in a safe area of the favela, dos Santos and her teammates are coached by two dedicated activists who are committed to helping them achieve their goals. While the road to success is filled with obstacles, including limited resources, lack of professional clubs, and the constant threat of violence in their community, these young women remain resilient and focused on their ultimate goal.

As they continue to train and improve their skills, dos Santos and her teammates are not only aiming to make it to the Women’s World Cup but also to inspire other girls in their community to pursue their passion for soccer. Despite the challenges they face, these young athletes are determined to overcome adversity and make their mark on the world stage.

With the support of their coaches, teammates, and the entire community, dos Santos and her fellow players are determined to defy the odds and show the world what they are capable of achieving. As they continue to work towards their goal, they serve as a shining example of perseverance, determination, and the power of dreams.
