Youngstown State University (YSU) is gearing up for the 2024 football season with a focus on maintaining their strong defensive identity. Despite significant losses on the depth chart, the Penguins are determined to continue their dominance on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach John Haneline emphasized the importance of stopping the run game, citing it as a key factor in winning games. With only one returning starter from last season’s finale, cornerback Jaylen Castleberry, YSU is looking to retool and rebuild their defense with a mix of experienced players and newcomers.

Players like Dawan Martin, Deamontae Diggs, and Michael Voitus are expected to step up on the defensive line, while transfer additions Antonio O’Berry and Jabarrek Hopkins bring added depth and talent to the mix. In the linebacker corps, Devin Johnson, Logan Pasco, and Mike Wells are set to take on larger roles, with new addition Carston Marshall also in the mix.

In the secondary, the Penguins are looking to fill the void left by a recent transfer with players like Amarian Robinson, Tyjon Jones, and Latrell Fordham stepping up. Head coach Doug Phillips praised the focus and discipline of the safeties, particularly highlighting Jones for his standout performance during spring practice.

As YSU heads into the final week of spring practice, the competition for starting spots remains fierce. With more changes expected in the coming months, the Penguins are focused on building a cohesive and competitive defense that can lead them to success in the upcoming season.
