Zach Wilson, Jets quarterback, opts out of offseason workouts in hopes of being traded

Quarterback Zach Wilson’s absence from the New York Jets’ voluntary offseason workouts has raised eyebrows as he continues to seek a trade, but no progress has been made on a potential deal. With the NFL Draft looming, teams are likely waiting to see how they address their quarterback situations with available prospects before deciding whether to pursue Wilson.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas confirmed that discussions have taken place with other teams regarding Wilson, but there has been no positive movement. Wilson, who has participated in offseason workouts in previous seasons, is now noticeably absent, indicating his frustration about a trade not materializing.

The Jets have already secured a backup QB in Tyrod Taylor, who signed a two-year deal worth up to $18 million. Taylor, a 13-year veteran, is expected to provide a more reliable option behind starter Aaron Rodgers.

Wilson’s performance on the field has been inconsistent, with the Jets going 4-7 in games he played last season. Since being drafted at No. 2 overall in 2021, Wilson has a 12-21 record as a starter, throwing for 6,293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions.

One major obstacle to a trade is Wilson’s contract, which guarantees him a $5.45 million salary for 2024. The Jets would incur an $11.2 million cap hit if they cut Wilson, making it a complex situation for the team to navigate.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Wilson’s future, both team owner Woody Johnson and GM Joe Douglas have not ruled out the possibility of keeping him on the roster. However, the potential for drama in training camp and throughout the season looms large if a resolution is not reached soon.
