Zelensky predicts increased intensity of Russian offensive in northeast Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning about the escalating conflict with Russia, stating that he expects Russia to intensify its offensive in the northeast. In an exclusive interview with AFP, Zelensky revealed that Kyiv only has a quarter of the air defenses it needs to hold the front line against Russian forces.

The recent assault by Russian forces in the Kharkiv region on May 10 has resulted in significant territorial gains for Russia, with advances of up to 10 kilometers along the northeastern border before being halted by Ukrainian forces. Zelensky expressed concerns that this may only be the beginning of a wider offensive by Russia.

Highlighting the urgent need for more air defense and fighter jets to combat Russia’s air superiority, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine currently has only 25 percent of the necessary resources to defend the country effectively. He called for the deployment of 120 to 130 F-16 fighter jets or other advanced aircraft to achieve air parity with Russia.

As the conflict continues into its third year, Zelensky acknowledged the challenges faced by Ukraine’s armed forces, including issues with staffing and morale. In response, Ukraine has lowered the mobilization age and tightened punishments for those avoiding military service.

Despite mounting pressure from Western allies for a swift resolution to the conflict, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is prepared for a prolonged struggle. He urged his allies to take a firmer stance against Russia and allow Ukrainian forces to strike into Russian territory with Western weapons.

The situation in the Kharkiv region remains tense, with ongoing battles and civilian casualties reported. As the conflict escalates, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
