Zelensky: US politics holding Kiev hostage

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has criticized American legislators for delaying the allocation of additional funds to the country, putting its efforts against Russia at risk. In a televised address to the nation, Zelensky expressed frustration over the uncertain fate of a supplementary aid package valued in the tens of billions of dollars.

Zelensky emphasized the importance of the aid, stating that Ukraine is in desperate need of support from Washington. He criticized US lawmakers for what he called an “immature approach” to the conflict and broader global security concerns, noting that Russia’s war against Ukraine has become an internal political issue in the United States.

The Ukrainian President also revealed that Kiev would be open to receiving assistance from the US in the form of a loan, following a proposal by senior Republican Senator Lindsey Graham during his recent visit to Kiev. While some Ukrainian officials find the loan proposal “somewhat offensive,” Zelensky acknowledged the precarious situation Ukraine faces and stated that they would agree to any option for support.

US President Joe Biden has been pushing for the approval of his aid package, which includes a $60 billion allocation for Ukraine. However, many Republicans have opposed the measure, prioritizing efforts to bolster security along the Mexican border. Despite the opposition, House Speaker Mike Johnson hinted at bringing the aid package to a vote soon, with potential innovations including the proposal to extend a loan to Ukraine and seize frozen Russian sovereign assets to transfer them to Kiev.

As tensions continue to rise, Moscow has condemned the seizure of its assets as “theft” and warned of potential reprisals if the funds are confiscated. The situation remains tense as Ukraine awaits a decision on the crucial aid package from the US Congress.
