Zelenskyy anticipates increased intensity of Russian offensive in northeast Ukraine | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stark warning about the escalating conflict with Russia, stating that Kyiv only has a quarter of the air defenses it needs to hold the front line. In an exclusive interview with AFP, Zelenskyy expressed his concerns about Russia’s recent offensive in the northeast, which has resulted in significant territorial gains for Russian forces.

Despite Ukrainian forces managing to halt the Russian advance after a few kilometers, Zelenskyy believes this could be just the beginning of a wider offensive. He emphasized the urgent need for allies to send more air defense and fighter jets to combat Russia’s air superiority, stating that Ukraine currently only has 25 percent of the necessary resources to defend the country.

The situation in the Kharkiv region, where the recent offensive took place, remains tense and unstable according to Zelenskyy. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed the offensive was in retaliation for Ukraine’s actions, but the rapid territorial gains made by Russian forces have raised concerns about the potential for further escalation.

As the conflict continues into its third year, Ukraine’s army is facing challenges with staffing and morale. Zelenskyy highlighted the need to bolster reserves and address issues within the ranks to ensure the country can effectively defend itself against Russian aggression.

With the implementation of a controversial mobilization law and ongoing military operations, the situation in Ukraine remains volatile. Zelenskyy remains determined to secure a final victory over Russia, despite Western allies pushing for a quick end to the conflict. The coming days will be crucial as both sides prepare for what could be a prolonged and intense battle for control.
