Zimbabwe Government Plans Mass Vaccination Campaign in Hurungwe Following Measles Outbreak that Claimed Lives of 35 Children

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The government of Zimbabwe has taken urgent action in response to a recent outbreak of measles in Hurungwe, Mashonaland West province, which tragically claimed the lives of 35 children. In a press briefing, Information Minister Jenfan Muswere announced plans for a mass vaccination campaign in the affected areas.

The decision to roll out mass vaccinations comes after reports surfaced on social media of children dying in Wards 22 and 4 of Hurungwe district. Multi-disciplinary response teams were dispatched to investigate the situation, revealing that 33 of the deceased children were from specific villages in the district.

Minister Muswere emphasized the mandatory nature of the vaccination program, stating that all children in the affected areas must be vaccinated, attend school, and receive medical attention. He also warned of consequences for those who defy the policy, particularly in light of resistance from some apostolic sects citing religious doctrines against vaccination.

The heartbreaking impact of the measles outbreak was highlighted by the loss of multiple children from the same families, with one household losing seven children and another losing five within a month. The severity of the situation only became apparent when a church member brought four children to Karoi Hospital, two displaying symptoms of measles and two of mumps.

The affected wards in Hurungwe RDC have been identified, and efforts are underway to prevent further loss of life through the mass vaccination campaign. The government’s swift response underscores the seriousness of the situation and the commitment to protecting the health and well-being of the community.
