Zimbabwe supports Raila’s bid for African Union (AU) Commission

President William Ruto of Kenya has successfully secured Zimbabwe’s support for Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship. This significant development comes as Kenya presents its candidature for the AUC Chairperson for the term of 2025 – 2028.

The decision for the Eastern Africa region to submit candidates for the AU Chairperson was made by the African Union Executive Council on March 15, 2024. President Ruto emphasized that Kenya’s candidature is driven by the country’s commitment to enhancing the Pan-African Agenda.

During bilateral talks with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Bulawayo State House, President Ruto expressed confidence in the partnership between Kenya and Zimbabwe. The two countries signed nine Memorandums of Understanding in various sectors including transport, infrastructure, health, education, defense, trade, and investments.

President Mnangagwa highlighted the importance of investors leveraging existing opportunities in both countries. He also expressed gratitude to Kenya for its unwavering support in calling for the removal of illegal Western-imposed economic sanctions on Zimbabwe.

President Ruto commended President Mnangagwa’s efforts to accelerate Zimbabwe’s economic development through infrastructure projects and the introduction of a new currency backed by gold reserves. He expressed optimism about the potential for immense growth and mutual benefit between Kenya and Zimbabwe.

The deep-rooted historical, socio-cultural, political, and economic ties between the two countries serve as a strong foundation for their continued collaboration. President Ruto’s declaration of support for Zimbabwe’s readmission to the Commonwealth and the lifting of sanctions further solidifies the commitment to strengthening bilateral relations for the prosperity and progress of both nations.
