Zverev Defeats Shapovalov in Madrid Once More

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Denis Shapovalov’s Madrid campaign came to an end on Sunday as he fell to Alexander Zverev for the second time in five appearances in the Spanish capital. The German dominated the match, showcasing his prowess on both serve and return to defeat the Canadian in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.

Zverev’s performance was nothing short of clinical, with 31 winners to just 7 unforced errors. Shapovalov, on the other hand, struggled under constant pressure on serve, facing 14 break points throughout the match.

Despite some moments of brilliance from Shapovalov, including a miraculous shot to level the second set at 5-5, he ultimately could not withstand Zverev’s relentless play. The German served for the match at 5-4 in the second set and sealed the victory with an ace, sending Shapovalov packing.

With Shapovalov and Leylah Annie Fernandez both out of the tournament, Félix Auger-Aliassime remains the lone Canadian hope in Madrid. He is set to face Jakub Mensik in the next round for a chance to advance to the last sixteen.

Zverev’s dominant performance against Shapovalov sets him up as a strong contender in the tournament, showcasing his skill and determination on the court. As the Madrid Open continues, all eyes will be on the remaining players as they battle for a coveted spot in the later stages of the competition.
